Amazon puts $100M+ into a 585,000 sq ft robotics plant in Indiana, weeks after Austin

Amazon will invest more than $100 million in a 585,000-square-foot advanced manufacturing facility in Greenwood, Indiana, the company announced on September 24, 2026. The plant is expected to launch in 2028, create 300 manufacturing and engineering jobs averaging nearly $100,000 a year, and build products for Amazon’s fulfilment and robotics network across North America.

Why it matters: Amazon is the largest operator of warehouse robots and is now expanding the factories that make them, at two new US sites in five weeks. That is capacity for its own fleet, not for sale, and it tightens Amazon’s control over its automation supply.

What will Amazon build at the Greenwood, Indiana plant?

The job list, per Design & Development Today, includes CNC operators, welders, powder-coating technicians, assemblers, manufacturing and controls engineers, quality specialists and programme managers.

That mix points to structural and mechanical hardware: frames, enclosures and assemblies for robots and material-handling systems, not chips or software. Amazon has not named the specific robot models the plant will support. Holly Sullivan, Amazon’s vice president of economic development, said the jobs will carry a median salary well above the regional average. Amazon says it has invested more than $40 billion in Indiana since 2008.

How many robots does Amazon have?

Amazon says it has manufactured more than 1 million robots in the United States. They are deployed across more than 300 facilities worldwide and assist with 75% of all customer orders Amazon delivers globally. These are company figures and have not been independently verified. Amazon did not break the total down by robot type; its best-known systems are mobile drive units, robotic arms and sortation robots, not humanoids.

The distinction matters for reading the investment. Amazon is scaling hardware that already works at volume. General-purpose humanoids are a separate and slower bet: Barclays this month pushed its expected mass commercialisation to about 2035 and argued task-specific fleets like Amazon’s may win first (Barclays moves humanoids to 2035).

How many robotics factories does Amazon have in the US?

Greenwood will be Amazon’s fourth robot-making plant, according to Quartz. Amazon’s own release says it already makes robots in Massachusetts and Texas. The Texas site was announced on August 19, 2026: a multibillion-dollar robotics manufacturing facility in Austin with 300 to 500 jobs. Austin mayor Kirk Watson said Amazon asked for no economic incentives or public money for that project. Amazon did not disclose incentives for Greenwood in its release.

The two announcements differ in scale. Austin is multibillion-dollar; Greenwood is $100 million-plus. That suggests Greenwood is a supporting fabrication plant rather than a second flagship.

What does it mean for robotics suppliers?

It means more of Amazon’s automation spending stays in-house. Amazon already builds its own robots at scale, more than 1 million by its count, and extra US fabrication capacity reduces its need to buy parts and assemblies from outside suppliers. Third-party vendors still have a role, but on Amazon’s terms.
