Boston Dynamics has finalised the supplier line-up for its Atlas humanoid and asked the selected companies to prepare for purchase orders covering 10,000 units, KED Global reported on October 27, 2026. Hyundai Mobis leads the group. KED described the supply chain as all-Korean and said the priorities are cost control, technology security and less dependence on China.
Why it matters: Hyundai has talked about Atlas in its plants for a year. This is the first reported volume number given to the companies that would have to build its parts.
Key Facts
- Request: prepare for purchase orders covering 10,000 Atlas robots; not a firm order (KED Global, Oct 27, 2026)
- Lead supplier: Hyundai Mobis (actuators); suppliers tagged include LG Innotek, Samsung SDI, LG Energy Solution, Namuga, MCNEX
- First orders expected late 2027 to early 2028, per Humanoids Daily’s reading of KED
- Separate KED report: Hyundai plans about 25,000 Atlas units in its plants from 2028
- Hyundai Mobis (Oct 30): Atlas actuator prototypes at Uiwang from November 2026; supply targeted around 2028
Who is in the Atlas supply chain?
Hyundai Mobis supplies actuators, the motor-and-gear units that drive each joint. KED’s coverage tags a wider group: IL, Namuga, SL, LG Innotek, Samsung SDI, LG Energy Solution, MCNEX, Cammsys, BH EVS, Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics. The article does not set out each company’s role. Humanoids Daily, reading the KED report, said first purchase orders are expected between late 2027 and early 2028, and that actuators make up about 70% of Atlas’s component cost.
What did Hyundai Mobis say on October 30?
Hyundai Mobis said with its third-quarter results on October 30 that it will start making prototype Atlas actuators at its Uiwang R&D centre in Gyeonggi Province in November, EBN reported. Supply is targeted for around 2028, after performance and reliability are validated with the customer. The actuator order is confirmed; Mobis plans to expand into hand grippers, perception modules and controllers and to supply more than one humanoid maker. It is creating a dedicated robotics core-parts organisation and plans to roughly double headcount in the area.
How does 10,000 compare with Hyundai’s plans?
It is smaller than Hyundai’s deployment target. KED has separately reported that Hyundai Motor Group plans to deploy about 25,000 Atlas robots across its factories from 2028, and that it is mobilising around 200 first-tier parts suppliers to build a domestic humanoid supply chain. Quantities and prices for the first orders have not been decided.
The actuator share explains why Hyundai Mobis sits at the top. Our actuator cost analysis found the same pattern across humanoid makers, and Mobis set out its actuator plans earlier this year.
Frequently Asked
How many Atlas robots is Boston Dynamics preparing to build?
Boston Dynamics has asked its suppliers to prepare for purchase orders covering 10,000 Atlas robots, KED Global reported on October 27, 2026. It is a preparation request; quantities and prices are not final.
Who supplies parts for Boston Dynamics’ Atlas?
Hyundai Mobis leads the supply group and provides actuators. Other Korean suppliers named in the coverage include LG Innotek, Samsung SDI, LG Energy Solution, Namuga, MCNEX and Cammsys.
When will Atlas go into volume production?
Hyundai Mobis will start making prototype Atlas actuators in November 2026 and targets supply around 2028. Humanoids Daily, citing KED, said first purchase orders are expected between late 2027 and early 2028, and Hyundai plans about 25,000 Atlas units in its factories from 2028.
