GMO puts a “humanoid ambulance” on Tokyo roads to swap out broken robots

GMO AI & Robotics Corporation (GMO AIR), a GMO Internet Group subsidiary, began operating a “GMO Humanoid Emergency Vehicle” in Tokyo in September 2026: a van that carries engineers, diagnostic equipment, spare parts and a replacement humanoid to a customer site, repairs the robot there, or swaps in the spare and takes the broken unit back to base. The company unveiled it on September 8 and calls it Japan’s first vehicle built specifically for humanoid maintenance.

What does the GMO humanoid ambulance do?

According to GMO’s release, the vehicle handles on-site diagnosis and repair when a humanoid fails. If the fault cannot be fixed on the spot, the crew leaves a replacement robot in place and transports the damaged one to a repair base, including the GMO Humanoid Lab showroom in Shibuya. The engineers who ride with it come from GMO’s physical AI lab, where they work on the robots’ internals and secondary development. Designer Yasumichi Morita of GLAMOROUS styled the interior and exterior after emergency vehicles, down to purple roof lights.

“The humanoid ‘ambulance’ carries the replacement humanoid to the site and replaces it with the damaged humanoid,” GMO AIR engineer Shota Takizawa said, as reported by Euronews on September 11.

Why does a humanoid need an ambulance?

GMO AIR said it built the service after deployments were disrupted when damaged humanoids had to be shipped away for repair. “Learning from that experience, we came up with the idea of providing replacement humanoids,” CEO Tomohiro Uchida said. In the release he framed it as a precondition for adoption: humanoids have to keep running, and without a way to reach a stopped machine on site, deployment cannot progress.

GMO AIR, founded in June 2024, is the authorised Japan distributor for Unitree Robotics as of June 2026 and runs a humanoid dispatch service. Since May 2026 it has supplied humanoids to a phased trial with JAL Ground Service covering airport ground-handling work. Each of those deployments turns hardware into an uptime commitment, and a two-week pilot like Osaka Metro’s station humanoid can absorb downtime in a way a contracted service cannot.

Who can use the service, and what does it cost?

The vehicle services only humanoids deployed by GMO AIR, with dispatch decided case by case, according to Engadget. There is one vehicle, based at GMO’s Tokyo headquarters; the company says it could add vehicles and bases if demand grows. GMO has not disclosed pricing or response times. The release says GMO AIR will expand post-installation support covering operation, refinement and maintenance, rather than treating the sale as the end of the relationship.

Why it matters: humanoid pricing debates focus on the unit price; for a customer, the number that decides whether the robot pays off is how it is paid for and how long it is down when it breaks. A spare-and-swap van is a distributor’s answer to that second number.
