Hyundai Mobis shows its first in-house humanoid actuators, the basis for next-generation Atlas

Hyundai Mobis publicly showed two humanoid-robot actuators of its own design for the first time on September 10, 2026, at its R&D Tech Day at the company’s technical research centre in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province, which runs to September 18. According to Seoul Economic Daily, the units are expected to serve as the basis for the actuators Mobis supplies for Boston Dynamics’ Atlas humanoid.

Why it matters: Mobis says actuators account for 40% to 60% of a humanoid’s manufacturing cost. Hyundai Motor Group, which owns Boston Dynamics, is sourcing that share from its own parts arm rather than an outside supplier.

What did Hyundai Mobis show at R&D Tech Day 2026?

Two actuator types, both still in development. Actuators combine a motor with a reducer and a controller to drive a robot’s joints, as Aju Business Daily put it in its report. Mobis did not publish torque, weight, power or cost figures for either unit.

The actuators were among 10 “hero products” at the event, the third edition of the biennial Tech Day, run under the theme “expansion from mobility components to future robotics.” The others included a next-generation hybrid-vehicle battery system that accepts both pouch and prismatic cells, and an integrated controller combining assisted driving and parking. Mobis said it invited customers from North America and Asia to discuss technical cooperation and component purchases.

How do the actuators fit into Atlas production?

Mobis is the actuator supplier for the next-generation Atlas; NewDaily reports that the supply arrangement was set out at CES in January 2026. Each Atlas uses 30 or more actuators, according to Pinpoint News, and NewDaily puts the figure at about 31.

The volume plan sits in the United States. Pinpoint News reported in June that Mobis is building US capacity for more than 350,000 actuators a year, aimed at full operation in 2028. NewDaily reported on September 15 that Mobis is hiring in the second half of 2026 for motor design, circuit design, control software, actuator mechanisms, robot-hand structures and production engineering. The production-engineering roles suggest the work is moving from R&D toward manufacturing. The 2028 date lines up with the group’s own schedule: at its CEO Investor Day on August 26, Hyundai set 2028 for Atlas on its US lines and a US robot plant with 30,000 units of annual capacity.

Why do actuators drive humanoid cost?

A humanoid has dozens of powered joints, and each one needs a motor, a precision reducer, sensing and control electronics. That is where most of the bill of materials sits, which is why the 40–60% range Mobis cites is the figure that matters for unit economics. Reducer makers are going after the same cost: Schaeffler says forming cuts strain wave gearbox manufacturing cost by more than 25%.

The auto-parts playbook Mobis is using here is volume, validation and cost control. Until Mobis publishes specifications or a unit price, the Tech Day showing tells us who will build Atlas’s joints and where. It does not yet tell us whether those joints are competitive.
