The 25th IEEE-RAS International Conference on Humanoid Robots closed its paper submission window on July 24, 2026. The conference runs December 6–9 at the Santa Clara Convention Center; organizers advertise more than 1,500 attendees from over 70 countries. Its designated special topic is "Humanoids and the Future of Work."
That choice is the news. A research community that spent two decades treating bipedal locomotion as the open problem has formally moved the open problem to economics: who deploys these systems, under what labor conditions, and with what consequences for the workers doing those tasks now. The call for papers lists benchmarks and performance indicators, and ethical and social challenges of deployment, as distinct research categories.
The Loco-Manipulation Challenge is the part to watch
Between 10 and 15 teams will compete in a Loco-Manipulation Challenge across one practice day and two competition days, scored on mobility, manipulation and dexterity, and reasoning. Loco-manipulation — walking and handling objects at the same time, through a single whole-body control policy rather than two controllers run in sequence — is the capability that separates a warehouse-useful robot from a demo.

The organizers also say leading commercial humanoid platforms will be run through similar tests before and after the competition period, alongside the competing teams. Scoring rewards autonomy but still awards points for teleoperated performance — an acknowledgment that the industry's current autonomy ceiling is itself an unanswered research question. The competition draws explicitly on the DARPA Robotics Challenge, whose December 2013 trials and June 2015 finals seeded most of the companies now shipping hardware.

Why it matters
Humanoid claims are currently unfalsifiable in public. Companies publish uptime, throughput and unit counts on their own terms, and there is no shared task circuit on which a Figure, an Atlas, a Digit and a university platform can be compared. Running 10–15 teams and a set of commercial platforms through a common scored circuit is the first credible attempt at an external yardstick — and the first indication of how far commercial platforms have actually pulled ahead of research labs, or whether they have.
The second signal is where the conference is being held. Santa Clara puts the event inside driving distance of 1X, Agility Robotics, Figure AI, Tesla's Optimus team and the robotics groups at Google DeepMind, NVIDIA, Meta and Toyota Research Institute. Academic conferences do not usually optimize for industry proximity. This one did.
