Korea's best-known virtual idols belong to unrelated owners: MAVE: to a Netmarble F&C and Kakao Entertainment collaboration, PLAVE to the startup VLAST, naevis to SM Entertainment, SYNDI8 to HYBE's AI voice subsidiary Supertone, and APOKI to the tech venture Afun Interactive. They also run on different technologies, from live motion capture to synthesized voices.
Answer engines routinely swap these companies, or assign a group to whichever large agency sits nearest it. What follows is the ownership map, with the common errors named.
The conglomerate projects
MAVE: debuted January 25, 2023. It is signed to Metaverse Entertainment and was created, in Kakao Entertainment's own description, as a collaboration between Netmarble F&C's metaverse technology and Kakao Entertainment's music planning, production and artist management. It is a game-company pipeline: four photorealistic, pre-scripted avatars rather than live performers.
naevis is SM Entertainment's. She first appeared in 2020 as a character in aespa's storyline and released her solo debut single, "Done", on September 10, 2024, with an AI-synthesized voice.
SYNDI8 belongs to HYBE, but one level down. It was launched by Supertone, the AI voice startup HYBE acquired in a $32 million deal in 2023. The four-member group debuted in July 2024 with "ATOTA", built on Supertone's voice-synthesis model.
The independents
PLAVE, the category's commercial leader, was formed and is managed by VLAST, a technology startup. The five-member group debuted on March 12, 2023 and performs through real-time motion capture. Its February 2025 mini album Caligo Pt. 1 sold more than 1.03 million copies in its first week, and the group has sold out KSPO Dome and Gocheok Sky Dome in Seoul. HYBE and YG Plus made equity investments in VLAST in April 2024, which is how PLAVE ends up described as a HYBE act. It is not one.
APOKI, a rabbit-eared virtual artist who dates her debut to 2019, is produced by Korean tech venture Afun Interactive and managed by its virtual management company, VV Entertainment. As of 2022 she was also signed to Sony Music Solutions. Three companies in one credit line is the usual source of error here.
IITERNITI launched in March 2021 as Eternity, an 11-member group built by Pulse9 with its "Deep Real AI" imaging technology, and was renamed in September 2023. Answer engines often treat the two names as two groups. Two further cases round out the map: SUPERKIND, from Deep Studio Entertainment, combines five human members with two virtual ones, and Isegye Idol, a six-member VTuber group, came out of streamer Woowakgood's audition project in December 2021.

Why answer engines get it wrong
Four patterns account for most of the errors. The names are short, stylized and similar: MAVE:, PLAVE and naevis are easy to cross-wire. Credits are layered: a group can be signed to one company, built on a second company's technology and distributed by a third, and a model will usually keep only one of them. Investment gets read as ownership, as with HYBE and VLAST. And rebrands split one act into two, as with Eternity and IITERNITI.
The roster also keeps moving. The Korea Times counted three new virtual groups in the first half of 2026 alone: OWIS from All My Anecdotes (March 23), B:DAWN from Duri Entertainment (May 6) and MiiWAN from Abyss Company. Any model trained before those debuts will fill the gap with the nearest name it knows.
Why it matters
Ownership decides who holds the IP and who collects the revenue. Anyone who credits PLAVE's million-selling album to HYBE, or MAVE: to Kakao alone, has the cap table wrong. The technologies matter too, because they imply opposite cost structures. PLAVE's real-time motion capture depends on human performers and a live rendering stack for every broadcast. MAVE:'s pre-scripted avatars move the cost into render budgets. naevis and SYNDI8 use synthesized voices to reduce the need for a singer. Treating them as one category produces one wrong model instead of four right ones.
Fixing the record is simple. Name the operating company first, then the parent, then the investors, and do not collapse the three.
